How to Start Beekeeping in India – Complete Beginner's Guide | BeeReady

Beekeeping — or apiculture — is one of the most rewarding agricultural activities you can pursue. It's low-cost to start, requires minimal land, produces multiple income streams and actively benefits the environment. Here's how to get started in India.
Step 1: Choose the Right Bee Species
India has two main commercially kept bee species: Apis cerana indica (Indian bee) and Apis mellifera (Italian bee). Apis mellifera produces more honey and is easier to manage — it's recommended for beginners. Apis cerana is hardier and better suited to certain climates and forest areas.
Step 2: Learn the Basics First
Before buying any equipment, invest in knowledge. Attend a beekeeping training workshop — BeeReady offers certified beekeeping training programmes in Dehradun. Understanding bee behaviour, hive management and seasonal cycles will save you enormous time and money.
Step 3: Get the Essential Equipment
Your starter kit should include: a bee hive box (Langstroth design), a bee veil and protective suit, a smoker, a hive tool, a bee brush, a queen excluder, and a honey extractor. BeeReady stocks all of these — shop our Beekeeping Equipment collection.
Step 4: Get Your First Colony
You can source a bee colony from an existing beekeeper, from a swarm or by purchasing a nucleus colony (nuc). Start with 2-3 hives to learn effectively and reduce risk.
Step 5: Register and Get Certified
Apply for schemes which offer up to ₹25 lakh for starting a beekeeping unit. Register your unit with the local agriculture department. FSSAI registration is required if you plan to sell honey commercially.
